As far as major life events go, moving houses has got to be one of the biggest outputs of energy, time and planning, up there with weddings and other significant events.
There are helpful tools such as Top Move to simplify the moving process and make it less costly. Beyond metrics and logistical moving support, many people turn to the ancient Chinese philosophical practice of Feng Shui for guidance in moving-related decisions.
Feng Shui is a traditional practice that uses energetic forces such as water and landscapes to harmonise an environment, thereby improving mental health and relationships. Qi (pronounced “chee”) is the cosmic current or energy flow present everywhere.
Feng Shui seeks to improve the flow of Qi in places and structures using astronomy, astrology, architectural design, cosmology, geography and topography as influential factors.
According to the Chinese calendar and Chinese astrology, there are both auspicious and inauspicious days for moving.
To get even more specific, there are “clash zodiac signs” on specific days, indicating which days are unlucky to move, depending on your personal Chinese zodiac sign. Each day also has an “evil direction”, signifying a direction that is not lucky on that day. Depending on which direction your new home faces, some days are luckier than others for your move.
In Chinese culture, the fifteenth day of the seventh lunar month is known as Ghost Day, and the entire month is called Ghost Month. Similar to western culture’s Halloween, Mexico’s Day of the Dead and the Celtic Samhain, it is believed that ghosts and spirits, including deceased ancestors, emerge from the lower realm to visit the living. On Ghost Day, Taoists and Buddhists perform rituals to alleviate the suffering of the deceased.
Ghost Month is considered an inauspicious time for moving because moving to a new place is thought to disturb spirits and ghosts, potentially bringing bad luck or negative energy. It is a taboo to make any major life changes or decisions during Ghost Month.
This year, Ghost Day falls on Sun, Aug 18, 2024, and ghost month is the 13 days before and after Ghost Day.
Use the following monthly charts to determine which days are lucky for your new move, and which days are to be avoided.
While many people would dread moving houses in the cold month of January, there are some benefits. January offers an opportunity to save money. It is not a typical time to move, so both moving companies and real estate sellers often have lower rates and prices. Also, you can spend time off work during Christmas and New Years holidays to pack, downsize and prepare for your move.
Jan 1st is the start of the Western calendar year and can symbolise a new chapter or new beginnings. According to Feng Shui, the January stars favour the northwestern and southern orientations.
For any symbolic home improvements such as setting up an altar or photo gallery, aim for the northwest corner. According to tradition this will help channel positive energy exactly where it's needed.

Chinese New Year falls on Feb 10th, 2024, making February a perfect month for new beginnings and a new home.
Just like in January, February is another winter month where moving companies have more availability and potentially lower rates. Houses on the market may have lower prices as well.
Water is life-giving and therefore symbolises prosperity in Feng Shui principles. The majority of days in February are water days, making it easy to find a perfect day to move houses.

The old saying “April showers bring May flowers” couldn't be more accurate. May is when things start to warm up and blossom, and the senses are awakened to a prism of colours, lush, floral aromas and sounds of birdsong.
Beltane is an indigenous European fertility celebration that historically fell on the May new moon and is now celebrated on May 1st.
Fertility and promise of abundance are excellent qualities for choosing a day to move into a new home and create harmony.
Feng Shui emphasises the importance of a clean, clear environment. After you’ve moved in and placed your belongings in their new spot, do a thorough dusting and vacuuming of your new home. This will allow for the positive flow of energy, or Qi, to circulate throughout your home.

With 10 lucky moving dates to choose from, you are almost guaranteed to find a day that lines up with the zodiac placements of you and your family, as well as your new home’s facing direction.
June is an activated month where everyone is preparing for the glory of summer and the school year is coming to an end. By waiting until the end of June to move, you can avoid the complications of moving while children are still finishing their studies.
When moving into a new home, place special care in how you set up your entryway. This is an area where all of the energies of the house flow though. Aim for a well-lit, spacious and clean entrance hall. This space will influence the vibrations throughout the entire home. Adding good-luck charms can boost good energy.

By the time July rolls around, summer is in full swing and energies are peaking in intensity and vigour. This potent time is perfect for moving houses.
Capture the light by using mirrors strategically. Mirrors can be placed in dark rooms or corners to expand space and reflect light, bringing energy into a Feng Shui “dead zone”. Natural light has the most positive energy, so place mirrors in areas where they can amplify natural light.
July is a time of abundant fresh flowers in all different vibrant colours. When arranged with care, fresh flower bouquets can create a harmonious flow of energy for your home, encouraging positive feelings, tranquillity and inviting good fortune. Choose appropriate colours according to Feng Shui colour theory to achieve the vibe you are seeking.

August is Ghost Month (see above) in the Chinese Calendar, with Ghost Day falling on August 18th. While it is thought to be inauspicious to move during Ghost Month, there are dates that are considered luckier than others. If you make sure that your and your family’s zodiac signs align with the moving day astrology, you can be sure to have a harmonious move.
Despite being Ghost Month, August is always a favourable time to move and settle in before children begin their new school year.

December has fewer auspicious dates for moving, but the ones that are lucky are extra potent.
The month of December is traditionally a time for both introspection and family, so make sure to prioritise quiet moments amidst the bustle of moving, and don’t forget to take the time and effort to deepen connections with family.
Air flow is a crucial factor in Feng Shui. During the cooler months, it's important to get enough fresh air. Open doors and windows regularly to allow fresh air circulation throughout your house. Ventilation plays a big part in promoting energy flow throughout a structure.
